Advisory Council for Senior Citizens
The Advisory Council for Senior Citizens:
- was established in 1992
- consists of four core members appointed by the Minister for Senior Citizens for a term of not less than two years
- provides the Minister with expert, independent, timely and confidential advice on issues concerned with the wellbeing of older people
- meets six times a year
- develops an annual work programme for consideration by the Minister
- undertakes other work at the Minister's request, or at the instigation of Advisory Council Members
- is supported with policy advice and secretariat services from the Office for Senior Citizens.
Appointment to the Council
The Minister for Senior Citizens seeks Cabinet approval for appointments to the Advisory Council.
Members are appointed as individuals, because of their knowledge of older people's issues and their community involvement, rather than as representatives of particular interest groups.
The Advisory Council may, at the request and consent of the Minister, co-opt two advisors to provide expert advice on particular issues without joining the Council as members.
