  • Between 2018 and 2023, the Fund has provided 65 small grants (between $5,000 and $15,000) to local councils, community groups, and non-profit organisations. These grants have enabled a wide range of initiatives, including intergenerational dance programmes, sewing workshops, dementia-friendly services, and maraebased events promoting health and education. The evaluation—led by Professor Stephen Neville (University of the Sunshine Coast), Dr Jo Conaglen (AUT), and Dr Jeffrey Adams (Eastern Institute of Technology)—concluded that the Fund “is performing excellently, with a strong positive impact.” It highlighted how dedicated community leaders and volunteers are the driving force behind the Fund’s success.

  • Financial abuse is often hidden. The most extreme cases of abuse can involve pressuring someone to give away property, demanding an inheritance, or misusing their
financial documents. But often financial abuse is subtle and hard to recognise.

It may be as simple as a caregiver stealing from a grandparent’s purse, or a daughter adding personal items to her mum’s shopping. Or not paying rent to a parent.
Or taking away their EFTPOS card so they can’t use it. The abuse might even be unintentional, or explained away as ‘for their own good’.

This publication looks at the signs of financial abuse, how you can protect yourself, and how to get help.

  • This report examines how experiences between ages 45 and 65 influence wellbeing after age 65. Using data from 787 older New Zealanders in the Health, Work and Retirement study, it applies sequence and cluster analysis to identify life-course patterns across employment, housing, health, relationships, caregiving, and adverse events. It then assesses how these patterns affect outcomes like economic wellbeing, social support, loneliness, depression, health service use, and multiple disadvantage.

The findings highlight key intervention points in mid-life to improve outcomes in older age. This report supports the Ministry of Social Development's Long-Term Insights Briefing, on current and future disadvantage for older people.
